Introduction
This Beautiful and Ugly World is an anime that combines a love and romance story with that of an action genre. It is another one of those short animes that is only twelve episodes long. By all standards, this anime is not exactly well known and if it was not for the title, I probably would not have even watched this anime. My expectations for it going in was low and for that reason, it was not a total failure.
Review
Story
For me, this is the biggest issue I have with this anime. With the way the anime started, I felt that this anime could have done so much more than what it did. All that drama and excitement I felt within the first few episodes began to turn into questions of why am I even watching this anime with its poorly developed storyline. It is basically one of those animes with great potential and fails to reach it.
If developed properly, this anime can stretch out to fifty episodes if not, at least, twenty six. Unfortunately, after the first few episodes, it began to go tangents that literally made it boring and all too predictable.
Characters
Character development was another dissappointment. I did not felt in touch with any of the characters or did I like any of them. There was also no uniqueness to the characters as all of their personalities has been done before. Obviously with so many animes out there, it would be near impossible to create a personality for a character that is different but even when they used the tried-and-true personalities, it felt like something was lacking.
Animation
The animation has mixed results. In normal, slow paced scenes, there was not anything special. It was just your typical animation that you see of animes within this generation. The action scenes were a little better and some were pretty darn good and damn exciting. Again, it falls back to the creators using the wrong path for the story.
Sound
The voice actors? Nothing special but not bad either. They did their job but there is not one where you will remember. I must say that I like the opening theme though as that was probably the only unique thing about this anime. The ending theme was just average and I do not even remember the background music so you can tell how good it is.
Conclusion
In the end, I was not dissappointed because my expectations was not high. Okay, I lied, I was a little dissapointed because after seeing the first few episodes, I really felt like this anime had something going here. But then it start to take the romance approach to the storyline (and it did not exactly do a good job on it either) and basically lose my interest. Other animes such as Suzuka was an interesting romance because their storyline flows smoothly. It took me a month to finish watching this short anime because I did not want to continully watch it.
As a final verdict, I would suggest you stay away from this anime because there are plenty of other good animes out there. You may just save yourself some extra time. And with that, it is time for me to move on to watching Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebillion which have rave reviews.
